Eventing
Eventing is the ultimate test requiring total trust, supreme athleticism, fitness and courage on part of both the horse and rider. Eventing combines three distinct phases: the elegance of dressage, the adrenaline and excitement of cross country and the skill and stamina of showjumping.
The three types of Eventing are;
One Day Events: the three tests normally take place on one day, but due to increasing entries may be held over two days.
Two Day Events: intended to give competitors practice at the additional technical and practical skills required in three day events. They follow the same pattern as one day events, the only difference being that the cross country test is extended to include a modified steeplechase and roads and tracks. The competition is conveniently spread over two days.
Three Day Events: the ultimate form of eventing and the three tests take place on separate days. Dressage is spread over one or two days. This is followed on the next day by the cross-country test, comprising two tests of roads and tracks, one steeplechase and the cross-country test itself. The object of the third day's jumping test is solely to prove that after a severe test of endurance, the horse has retained the suppleness, energy and obedience necessary for him to continue in service.
How to Start
Firstly you will need to become a member of the EFA to compete at official Eventing events, register your horse and obtain a current performance card. Eventing competitions are conducted at over 10 clubs throughout Western Australia. These clubs and societies are a good starting point and a visit to one of their event days is a great idea.
Lessons / Clinics
There are a number of excellent NCAS EFA qualified and accredited coaches. A list of current NCAS registered coaches near you can be found on this website under the "search" facility. It is a good idea to have lessons before going to an event. Once you and your coach are confident that you are ready to attend an event many clubs and the State Equestrian Centre hold events that you can enter starting at the lowest height. These are a good opportunity to familiarise yourself with a competition in a friendly atmosphere.
Dates / Events
You can obtain all the current eventing dates under the Calendar feature on this website.
Competitions
It is always always important for those participants in Eventing to be familiar with the rules and regulations that govern this sport. For rules and regulations on any major events riders should purchase a Handbook available from the EFA office or equestrian outlets.
Clubs
Clubs that run eventing events are friendly and encourage new riders and spectators to the sport. Several clubs specialise in teaching and training event riders.
