Horses, Clubs and Grants to Help Protect the Environment
Julie Fiedler from Horse SA has kindly provided this information
As we become increasingly aware of our influence on the environment, horse clubs and managers of horse facilities on public land may like to consider what can be done to improve their own surrounds. (Think locally. Act globally)
The good news is that many environmental improvements are eligible for government grants.
The type of considerations clubs (or managers of equestrian facilities on public land) can consider include
-
Installation of dual-flush toilets and water-efficient taps and showerheads
-
Installation of rainwater tanks
-
Exchange of inefficient watering systems for more efficient ones
-
Exchange of turf riding surfaces for non-grass/artificial surfaces
-
Upgrade of horse washing areas to include more efficient use/re-use of water
-
Installation of horse watering points (taps, troughs, tanks) to remove reliance on dams, creeks or other watercourses.
General aspects to consider are
Ensuring horse day yards are surfaced and drained to prevent erosion & “pugging”
Establishing a formal manure management program/professionally designed manure bay. (Care must be taken so that “rain events” do not flush nutrient-loaded water into creeks or other watercourses)
Evaluation of cross-country course tracks and fences, to maintain creek bed and creek bank integrity. This may mean redesign, relocation or decommissioning of unsuitably located fences.
Strategic planting of windbreaks for specific purposes including sheltering buildings (and reducing heating & cooling needs) protection of groundcover (reducing wind erosion) and proving shade and shelter for humans, horses and native wildlife.
There are also ways to save on Energy: Many clubs have old fridges, leaky urns and ancient heaters, which are not energy efficient. Why not apply for a grant to get new, energy-efficient appliances or even solar power! www.sustainable.energy.sa.gov.au/ has an audit sheet which can be done against any clubroom as the basic household appliances and energy uses will be similar.
Where to look for a grant
Grants are advertised. Get used to reading your newspapers and cutting out the adverts, following up straight away. It takes a few weeks to put some applications together so dont leave applications until the last minute.
Local Government/Shire
Every Local Government agency will have a range of small community level grants on offer at least once a year. Your local government elected member should be invited periodically to your club functions and be sent club newsletters. They can keep you informed of Council initiatives, and put you in touch with the right Council officer who oversees the grant programs. Your elected member should be aware of your grant applications and provide a letter of support.
Active clubs will have members who regularly visit the Council website, attend local public meetings in relation to community facility strategic planning & community land management. You are more likely to be successful with grants at all levels if your local horse grounds are featured in Council strategic planning, tourism and related documents.
State Government Grants
Taking the next “step up” sees your club working closely with your state equestrian federation branch, horse council or other state body to gain support through the grant preparation process. More funds are available, but application and reporting requirements rise accordingly.
Visit the websites of government departments that cover recreation & sport, regional development, environment, planning regulations, tourism, agriculture, animal health, employment, education, small business development and social/volunteering areas. Horses cover a lot of portfolio areas!
Grants at this level will require you to demonstrate how you are working to improve a region, a catchment or grow active participation in sport or tourism in horse activities. Your application process will need to include linkages not only to the EFA (if applicable) strategic plan, but the relevant plans of the government department supplying the funds. Local government support is generally required. This can be “in-kind” e.g. officer time to project manage or earthmoving tasks are often within Council reach.
